Ultimate Library have teamed up with luxury resort, Soneva Fushi to bring the first ever pop-up bookshop to the Maldives. Our search for a barefoot bookseller to run this venture has attracted candidates from around the globe.
Bookbrunch, a niche-bookselling website, posted a feature advertising our search for a resident barefoot bookseller, which went on to spark the imagination of bibliophiles around the globe and was promoted by such wide ranging publications as Lonely Planet, CNN, Vanity Fair (IT), La Repubblica (IT), 9 Travel (AU), The Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Evening Standard, The Telegraph and many more in over 40 countries.
The application period is now reluctantly closed as our team is currently reading through the applications we’ve received to find the perfect candidate. We are very sorry for any disappointment that this may have caused, however please keep checking back for future opportunities!
The enthusiasm for the story, and the thousands of applications we have received, indicate a vibrant international community of bibliophiles. From Aberdeen to Argentina, China to Chile, Krakow to Kazakhstan, Moscow to Melbourne, Florence to Florida, and Sweden to South Africa, applicants have truly poured in from all over the world. These enthusiastic booklovers come from all walks of life and before they began dreaming of deserted islands, they were bankers, poets, filmmakers, animators, authors, teachers, surfers, and biologists. The diversity of applicants proves that in our current uncertain times, the dream of a residency among books, sea, and sand is universally appealing.
The role of the barefoot bookseller will be more than managing a shop. We envision a multi-varied role requiring a multi-talented person who will create a community of book enthusiasts both on the island and beyond, through shared content on IG, Twitter, Youtube and newsletters. We want everyone in the world to experience, even vicariously, the joy of escaping to a desert island, opening your favourite book and diving in to the joys of reading, turning off the phone, and connecting with the rhythms of the sea.
To join our community of island loving readers, follow the adventures of the barefoot bookseller on Instagram, Twitter, our blog and newsletter.
